A Perspective on Rheological Studies of Gas Hydrate Slurry Properties Perspective

Ahmad A.A. Majid, David T. Wu, Carolyn A. Koh

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 321-329 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.05.017

Abstract:

Gas hydrates are solid inclusion compounds that are composed of a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network of water cages that can trap small gas molecules, such as methane and carbon dioxide. Understanding the rheological properties of gas hydrate crystals in solution can be critical in a number of energy applications, including the transportation of natural gas in subsea and onshore operations, as well as technological applications for gas separation, desalination, or sequestration. A number of experimental and modeling studies have been done on hydrate slurry rheology; however, the link between theory and experiment is not well-defined. This article provides a review on the current state of the art of hydrate slurry viscosity measurements from high- and low-pressure rheometer studies and high-pressure flowloops over a range of different sub-cooling (ΔTsub=TequilTexp) and fluid conditions, including for water and oil continuous systems. The theoretical models that have been developed to describe the gas hydrate slurry relative viscosity are also reviewed. Perspectives’ linkage between the experiments and theory is also discussed.

Strategy for Improving Product Quality of Manufacturing Industry in China

Zhang Hao, Zhang Gang, Jiang Jiadong, Zong Xijun

Strategic Study of CAE 2022, Volume 24, Issue 2,   Pages 38-47 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2022.02.002

Abstract:

Currently, the product quality of China’s manufacturing industry is uneven and has a notable gap with that of developed countries. Improving the quality of manufactured products is vital for upgrading China’s manufacturing industry and promoting the core competitiveness of the industry. In this study, we first analyze the development characteristics regarding the quality of the manufacturing industry, and then examine the development trend and prominent problems regarding the product quality of China’s manufacturing industry. While summarizing international experiences, we propose several suggestions for product quality improvement. Specifically, China should (1) clarify the strategic positioning of product quality development and strengthen the coherence of national quality policies; (2) focus on the needs of future industrial development by implementing three action plans; (3) accelerate the innovation of quality management theories, technologies, and tools under the guidance of digital transformation; (4) integrate the industrial quality infrastructure to support the product quality improvement; (5) reconstruct the quality development environment to promote enterprises’ willingness in improving product quality; and (6) maximize the institutional advantages of the country to implement foundation projects for improving product quality.

A combination of damage locating vector method (DLV) and differential evolution algorithm (DE) for structural damage assessment

T. NGUYEN-THOI, A. TRAN-VIET, N. NGUYEN-MINH, T. VO-DUY, V. HO-HUU

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 1,   Pages 92-108 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0379-1

Abstract: In this study, a two-stage method is presented for identifying multiple damage scenarios. In the first stage, the damage locating vector (DLV) method using normalized cumulative energy ( ) is employed for damage localization in structures. In the second stage, the differential evolution algorithm (DE) is used for damage severity of the structures. In addition, in the second stage, a modification of an available objective function is made for handing the issue of symmetric structures. To verify the effectiveness of the present technique, numerical examples of a 72-bar space truss and a one-span steel portal frame are considered. In addition, the effect of noise on the performance of the identification results is also investigated. The numerical results show that the proposed combination gives good assessment of damage location and extent for multiple structural damage cases.

Coordinated Development of Water, Food, and Energy in Upper and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River

Jiang Shan, Wang Jianhua , Liu He , Zhu Yongnan, He Guohua, Li Wei, Huang Hongwei

Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 4,   Pages 180-190 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.04.012

Abstract:

The upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River is an important region in China characterized by ongoing conflicts regarding water resources, food, and energy. To achieve high-quality development of the region, it is essential to identify water, food, and energy security risks and propose corresponding measures. This study examines the basic implications of water-food-energy coordinated development and analyzes the new situation, opportunities, and challenges associated with the coordinated development of water, food, and energy in the region. Focusing on the goals of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, the study proposes a strategic framework for coordinating water, food, and energy development. It further proposes the following suggestions: (1) maximizing the utilization of water resources, (2) taking the energy industry as a pillar industry of the region and enhancing energy production efficiency, (3) ensuring food security by strengthening water support, (4) minimizing the negative impacts of food and energy development on water resources and ecology, and (4) innovating technological and institutional approaches to guarantee water, food, and energy security.
